Author Topic: NOOB QUESTION: Diagonal movement without 10-key? Also, is Adventure Mode for me?  (Read 2791 times)

I play DF on a laptop that doesn't have a 10-key. I'm really curious about Adventure mode, but I gather that diagonal movement is essential to combat and maneuvering. Can movement commands be remapped to other keys to allow for diagonal movement? Is there a good fix?

Also, is Adventure Mode fun? I'm curious and love the idea of a sandbox roguelike, but am nervous that it is half-baked or broken or buggy, as Fortress Mode seems to get the lion's share of Toady's dev time.

You can use the corresponding number keys (1 for SW, 3 for SE, 7 for NW, and 9 for NE).

I assume 10-key is numpad, just type the numbers on the regular number row. that would correspond to the numbers on the numpad:
7=NW, 9=NE, 1=SW, 3=SE

You could use xpadder or some other program to map the keys to a controller.

Alternatively, if you're willing to shell out 20 bucks, you can buy a USB numpad at any big retail outlet. Or just buy a new laptop with a numpad. The ones with numpads are generally bigger and better for gaming because of the extra space. That or they're at least cheaper.

If you are a rougelike veteran you might want to try using hjkl keys.
I've never tried it because I don't want to have to relearn all the affected commands.

As far as how enjoyable Adventure Mode is, that sort of depends on what you're looking to get out of it.  It does not have a story, and the quests are pretty much all the same just to kill different targets (though sometimes this can be Fun because you will get a target that is from the civ that gave you the quest... huzzah!)

If you're looking to kill mountains of people, monsters, or animals, Adventure Mode can be great fun.  And if you are willing to use some mods, you can also give yourself the ability to do some measure of crafting skills, so you can do survivalist fun things.  And if you want to do more modding, you can play as any creature you want... from a chicken to a bronze colossus.

But if you're looking for something with a lot of sense of progression or goals, I've never found Adventure Mode to give that.  Maybe after the next update, because it has a lot of Adventure Mode specific things like sewers and deadly foes.

Basically look at it this way, does ripping one guy's throat out with your teeth while choking two other people to death while curb stomping another trying to flee from you sound like something you are into? Then this is your mode.

Do you need a "save the world!" storyline to have fun? If so, this is not your mode.

Girlinhat: The biggest issue seems to be size.  A 1x1 room would allow for maximum child desecration.

What really made me fall in love with adventure mode was murdering all my 19 companions after becoming a legend. One of the last survivors then shot me in the neck, and it was a race against time to murder as many of the surviving inhabitants of the fort as possible - mostly wounded. Every move had to be planned carefully as time was precious with my irrecoverable rage-filled blood gushing out in a torrent. I killed four, including the one who shot me.

Or that one time I scuffled with a crossbowman until I could stab his eyes out with a bolt he shot me with that got lodged firmly in the wound.

Or crawling like a worm in immense agony, with every limb red, scrambling desperately as an elite bowman and his friend land bolt after arrow in my body.

But as has been mentioned the above gore comes with practically no story. You're just a dude set out to kill dudes and then get killed.
