I caused some flooding and now I want to wall it off.
« on: December 10, 2011, 07:15:04 am »

The flooding wasn't intended, which is why I didnt set upa  floodgate i the first place.

Whats the best way to stop the water from flowing into my dig site while there's water pooling in it? There's a small hallway where my dwarves can still stand, and I started to build a floodgate there not really knowing what the best way to go about it being, and now they're suspending the construction because its technically still submerged.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
also the source is a river and is a depth of 1 in the area i want to dig, and a depth of 2 along most of the 1 block wide hallway

For a flooding problem, people generally need screenshots.

So post some screenshots, and you'll get advice.

But generally, evacuate the whole area. Then try to get to the part where it's leaking and try to reroute the water, either by digging into it from below or by channeling into it from above and pumping it out, leading it to an infinite drain or off the map. Don't pump it back into the river, as it'll just flow back again. If you have access to magma, you can also cast the leak shut.

The infinite drains the first responder mentioned work by digging to the edge of the map and then carving a fortification into the last block of stone. Water flows through the fortification and into another universe.

Fluids can also be crushed out of existence under a drawbridge, or mined when frozen so you have space to build a dam across the river.

ahh, i think i've solved the problem. i dug out another small area and channeled it into a sort of swimming pool. the water got low enough for me to finish building a floodgate separating my dig area. great success!!!!

You can drain it back to the river, but you've gotta do it down stream of the original. I'd use the pump stop trick, basically pumps pulling water up and dumping it behind them. They'll out pump the river's ability to flow, and give you the necessary time to block it off.

Congrats on getting it sealed though. Now you have the potential for a cistern.

Or disaster, but that's the name of the game.
