So, I'm going with an "elite" military setup on Relichome, my newest and so far most profitable fort. All dwarves have candy armor and either candy weapons for blades, or silver for my two hammerdorfs.
The military has 3 Spearmasters, 3 Axe Lords, 2 Swordsmasters, a Hammer Lord, and...
One hammerdorf. With adequate combat skills. He's been conscripted at the same time as one of the Swordsmasters, and was just as untrained. Every other squad spars almost non-stop, giving them all Legendary fighter and usually Great or Master weapon skills in about a year. However, I operate off of a master-studen squad setup, with a legendary dwarf teaching and a new student getting training from him. They each have non-matching weapons so they spar instead of demonstrating to eachother. For example:
Squad 1:
Spearmaster
Axedwarf
Squad 2:
Axe Lord
Speardwarf
Squad 3:
Hammer Lord
Sworddwarf
etc., etc.
So, the squad with the hammerdwarf and a Spearmaster, instead of sparring like the rest, spends all day doing individual combat drills. No demonstrations, no sparring. They have an identical barracks space to all the other dwarves, and the Spearmaster trainer has successfully trained one of the militia before.
So am I doing something wrong, or is that hammerdwarf just a defective soldier? If it's just luck, since he's so unskilled I can just relieve him of duty and put another dwarf in the military, I already have gotten dwarves with much more skill in hammering than he has just from migrant waves.
