Magma causing weird stone.
« on: May 15, 2008, 09:43:00 pm »

Ok this is pretty weird.  I have Slate in my fortress.  Usually this wouldn't be too unusual but its Slate, with a capital S.  Usually its slate, lowercase.  This Slate doesn't appear to be a normal rock for two reasons.
1)It has a value of 0 and uses the tile for sand.
2)It MOVES.  Yes that's right, it MOVES.  I have seen it move.  It appears to move kind of like a vermin, randomly appearing and disappearing.

Here you can see it.  Its the one to NW from the cursor.

I've got a save ready when needed.

ive seen this in my game as well, didnt think anything of it..   it moves more like water shuffles around...    and as far as i can tell, the Slate is different than the slate, one is listed as a glob because its molten, the other is listed as rock cause its not.   and later after its all melted into the magma, it shows up as a liquid and when zoomed to it just shows standard magma

This might be a contaminant from lava melting slate, and becoming lava with Slate melted in it. However, I don't know for sure.

Not a bug.
Magma melts rocks. Melted rocks are very light. Magma pushes melted rocks.
Hard to see if you pump your magma. Usually happens if magma flows slowly.
First layer of 1's covers rocks and melts them, and then layer of 2's pushes rocks further.

but I have Slate and Molten Slate.  They are two different things.  Perhaps the melted rocks get pushed away and are recooling. It still seems like slightly weird behavior no matter what explanation I come up with.

Does it stay regular "Slate" forever when the lavas on it?  My vote would be on recooled slate, but it's strange if it never melts.  Then again, there was another bug where some items in lava squares were taking forever to melt, so it could be running into that as well.  But yeah, if it's a hardened puddle of formerly molten slate, there are a lot of things that should be handled differently about it.
