Human wagons left for no reason

The human merchants turned up with all their wagons and started making their way towards my depot, so I started hauling my golden crafts to the depot to trade. A little while later I went to check on the depot, and I saw that it said "There are no merchants trading right now". I looked around and found one human wagon was left, and watched it head for the nearest edge and disappear. I *know* it wasn't just because I took too long to complete the trading, because I'm looking at the message listing and there's no message of "The merchants have embarked on their journey"; the last message I got about them was "Merchants have arrived and are unloading their goods". Besides, they'd only just got there, there's no reason they'd have had to leave. The onlt thing I can think of is that I just finished building a rough stone road while they were on their way to the depot, maybe that threw off their pathfinding somehow.

Um, never mind. Turns out they'd fallen in the moat  :(

wagon path finding definitely does have some issues,
no, my trade depot is not underground
yes, those stairs are the only way into my forge
