Channels and the cave river.

It seems that whenever dwarves build channels leading from the cave river, the end up getting sucked into the cave river and dying.

Put a floodgate up against the river first, and channel from there.  Make sure there's no openings on the sides of your floodgate or it will, well, flood.  Only open the floodgate when your channels are done.

Also if you really don't want to dick around with floodgates, another option is to dig the square attached to the river last and then just make sure your shittiest miner is the one to die.

If you absolutely can't lose any dwarf though, Aq's solution is the only one I'm aware of

Is that a multi piece channel or are you designating it as one long piece?  I can see a problem if you use multiple pieces at once and he digs out the one away from the river first then heads to the river to finish as he'll really be in deep when done and might have a pretty hard time trying to escape.
