Wall patterens
« on: December 10, 2011, 11:41:24 am »

I've ended up making my tower out of several different types of rock block as I never had enough of one sort for an entire floor. Rather than random chunks of colour I decided to alternate the blocks for a stripy effect.
This is a complete nightmare to designate!
Is there any simpler way to do this rather than having to designating one tile at a time?

you could try using a macro, but since the order of the stone changes, i dont think so

you could forbid all building materials of some kinds. Designating each wall seperately is less of a hassle if you have only one stone or other material to choose from. And dont forget to unforbid everything after you finish that part of wall

You could designate a wall or floor to be built from one type of stone and then cancel (q►x) every other tile. You still have to fill in the gaps, but this will save half the time overall.

I think that you actually could do it with a macro. Make a stockpile for one color as far away as you can form the build site and a stockpile for the other as close as possible, enter the constructions menu and start placing a wall, put it in the spot you want to start, and then record ENTER ENTER w 6 ENTER - ENTER w 6, for instance; that should make 2 walls, the first of the first material of the list and the second of the last material on the list directly to the right of it, then put the cursor where it needs to be to run the macro properly again.

...Just tested that, and it works. I happen to have a lot of spore tree wood far away from the surface and a lot of obsidian close to the surface, so those are my first and last materials, and doing just what I put down above made an alternating dark gray/dark teal set of wall blueprints.

Just want to point out that you can use shift+enter to state that all constructions in a given designation should be made out of the selected material. Also there are keys (u,i,o,p? Something like that, I'm not sure right now but it states it on the (C)onstructions menu) that allow you to expand the size of the constructions being designated. As such you could designate a stripe 10 tiles long and up to 10 tiles wide with a single designation, which when combined with the shift+enter command allows for fast designation of large areas.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
