Mayor election: how often?

How often is the mayor election being held? is there any way to mod the election schedule?

Every summer. The guy (or gal) with the most friends gets elected (presumably because all their friends vote for them in the voting process), so if you have a dwarf (peasant or a retired veteran) who just bums around in the meeting area all day chatting to people is likely to be elected every year.

Also, children (born into your fortress or otherwise) tend to meet that criteria and have LOADS of friends by the time they reach the ripe old age of 12 (adult for dwarves). I think it's a survival mechanism...they know that if they get into one of those "accidents", the peasantry will revolt.
