[38b] Tower-caps growing outside in an evil area
« on: May 09, 2008, 02:48:00 am »

Note: could this be related to bug 819 (dead trees in evil regions marked as subterranean)?

I started my latest fortress in a haunted area, with dead trees, zombie deer and everything. About a year into the game, using the advanced technology of cave spider silk detection (CSSD), I discovered an underground lake. Soon after that, I noticed some green vegetation growing in my otherwise dead above-ground forest. Imagine my surprise when I found that some of the plants growing there were young tower caps. Some shrubs have also started to grow there. Both the young tower-cap and shrub tiles are marked as Inside/Dark/Subterranean. I can upload a save, if needed.

The dead trees in haunted areas give the tile that they're on the inside/dark/subterranean flags, even after they've been cut down.  They also provide patch of sand when cut down, even if the local soil isn't sand.

You probably had a few dead trees that were cut down, and now tower-caps are growing in their place.

Actually, that sounds kinda fun.  "Revitalizing" a haunted area by cutting down all the dead trees and then growing tower-caps in their place by muddying the map.  Sounds like a good candidate for a challenge.

Ah, yes, you're spot on. The ground tiles where dead trees used to grow show up as "Loamy Sand Cavern Floor". Time to find out if they grow on real loamy sand cavern floor without flooding..
