More organic catacombs
« on: November 17, 2011, 10:59:24 am »

I'm on a rather messy fort, so there are loads of bodies (dwarven ones) and I'm planning to finish my necropolis but it is getting too "squary".
Any tips on making more organic fort?

You could check out the bedroom design page on the wiki or this thread for some more designs. Sure technically they are for bedrooms, but all a crypt is is a bedroom with a coffin in it instead of a bed anyways. I find the fractal ones are especially rewarding, though they take a lot of extra effort to set up.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Mine out mineral veins and fill them with coffins.

superimpose random shapes on a z level, like

+-^R%
%c#t=

and mine that out, with a bit of editing. You'll get twisty corridors, hidden niches and crooks and the occasional actual room, even if it IS a weird shape. Any more advanced writing program has lots of those little icons. I remember in some cases holding ctrl (i think), and typing 3 or 4 numbers could make special symbols or letter appear. That way you can make it even more random, since you wont know the shape in advance

And anyone seeing it later and figuring it out gets a good laugh

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

I'm not sure how "organic" this is but here's an old thing of mine. In stonesense, even!
