I'm lost! :o

So I wanted to start adventure mode but I don't know how to play/what to do xD I just died on my first adventure mode killed by some creatures. Any tips for a newb?

Meh I don't get it I killed an alligator and I can't pick up anything off it, says I don't have a free grasp.

Also where can I find shoopkeeper?

shopkeepers are found in larger towns, look for yellow boxes on the fast travel map.
and, (making a mod assumption based on your tagline.) what race/caste are you playing?

there not as accepted Aswell as others. And you have to deequip something to grab, then put it in your back pack, if my memory serves me right.

Tip: Don't start as a human outsider if this is your 1st game.

I can't recommend this page highly enough:

Just follow it through and then you are ready to explore knowing what todo. Then search the wiki or here for any questions you have, this forum and the wiki are a wealth of information.

fast-travel, and try and get to a town before dark.. Better to start from a civ, when you can. although, after my current fortress falls, I might do an outsider embark, just for story reasons.

Watch some online tutorials on youtube or whatever, tutorials helped me out when I was newb. (adven mode tutorials but DF tutorials too since fortess mode is fun also)

Go on DF wiki to see how things work that will also help you.

Start in a civ go to the nearest fortess and get some friends. (If its too far and it will be night before you get to the fortess than hire some peasants in a house to come with you.)

DO NOT GO OUTSIDE IN THE WILD DURING NIGHT ALONE WITH NO COMPANIONS OR BOGEYMEN WILL CHASE YOU INTILL YOU GET TO A TOWN (cant fast travel) OR ITS SUNLIGHT

final tip: if you go into a shop (only towns with yellow buildings have shops) dont steal people will kill you

I actually find it quite fun to go on a cross country run at night :P
If they keep up with you, you end up with a death ball of teleporting night beasties. Scary.
