Affirms sphr's affirmation of dreiche2's statement.
I gave the bookkeeping job to a peasant after the first immigration and yes, I lost his productivity for quite a while getting the accounts completely accurate. It was an easy way to get another legendary dwarf. Now I need to find other stuff for my bookkeeper to do though, as he doesn't do much counting any more.

If DF kept a total of each resource type, it would speed it up. although with custom modding, 4 bytes more for each added material and state.

A simple submenu system that hides the count on the top-level menu would solve the problem.

When the computer has to show a count, even an "approximate" count, it must do an exact count.  The solution is to not show the count until requested, at which time you pay the price in CPU time to see it.

Doesn't it already? Otherwise just opening the stocks screen would take ages.
