Caged Animals for free?
« on: March 02, 2007, 04:08:00 pm »

This may be related to bug #000041:

□ [dwarf mode][creatures]   creatures escape from cages when brought to the depot sometimes

The human caravan showed up as I was moving my critters from cage to cage, and I noticed more animals than I was used to. Sure enough, my Animal Haulers ransacked the Caravan and hauled the new animals to their new homes.
I noticed that the trade screen had empty cages, which I presume formerly housed my new livestock.

I gave them a nice tidy profit just in case, but I'm not sure if they registered the loss.

Were you able to select their animals for your own cages?

That's precisely what happened. I had two female cows in separate cages, and I was attempting to put them both in the same cage, as I was doing so, I noticed a bull on the list. The caravan had appeared on the road and wasn't even in the depot yet.

When I assigned the bull to the cage with the cows, an idle hauler immediately ran out to the caravan and grabbed the bull with no interference from the caravan whatsoever. I think I also managed to acquire a Mule and two cats this way, all before the caravan hit the depot.

Okay, I'll note it down.  The merchants will notice the loss -- they just calculate the total value of their cargo after they leave.  It's hard to cheat this system, but it also blames you for things that aren't your fault.

Somewhat related, I guess - the Human caravan was in town and I'd asked them for dogs, but for one reason or another I didn't get around to trading with and then I got the 'merchants have left' notification. Later on when I checked the depot there were two empty cages sitting there which weren't there before.

I'm not sure whether they left the cages and took the dogs back, or I got two more Stray Dog (Tame) added to my fortress (plenty of those running around).

I have also seen the Traders' animals in my cages' [a]ssign animals list.

Another note, they seem to be counted as somewhat hostile or something, and can't be released until the traders leave.

If you try to add them to a cage, they get brought there without problem. But if you then try to release them the guy comes, grabs them, and then gets "stuck" to the animal until the traders leave. He keeps canceling everything else he is set to do saying "handling dangerous animal." I had a hauler almost die of thirst because of this.

Once the traders are gone the animals officially become yours and work like any other animal, and anyone trapped by them seems to be released.
