Rats dont drop down retracted bridges.
« on: November 07, 2011, 12:57:22 am »

Not sure why, but we cant post new topics in bug reports which is ironic..

Anyway, its also a gameplay issue so here goes.

Ive got a retractable bridge over the top of a magma vent (meant to be a volcano, but its conveniently not super tall). One day i noticed a rat sitting around ontop of it and thought it would be fun to drop it in. Pull lever -> nothing happens. THe bridge is retracted but Super Rat decides gravity is over rated and stays walking about on the same Z level like theres no problems.

Hopefully this is a wider bug and not something specific ive got from corrupted game/whatever.

Also, yes: i checked to make sure it didnt have wings :D

The bug report forum topic has been superseded by the bugtracker: http://bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/

Is the rat just a tiny speck on your screen? With the name: rat? If so then it is a vermin. Vermin obey their own laws of physics (phasing in and out of reality and teleporting) and are not really creatures. They just annoy dwarfs and eat your food/get killed by cats and eaten by dwarfs.

Yeah, vermin don't give a crap about little things like physics.

Rats also ignore opening drawbridges. I was opening my side entrance after a siege and after giving the order to pull the lever i went to watch the bridge an noticed a rat sitting in the danger zone. I was surprised when the bridge opened and the rat was then sitting on top of the open bridge. So it seems that rats ignore opening and closing bridges in general.

I'd guess that other vermin would also do so, but so far we've only heard about rats.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Thank science they havent learnt how to make fire and get organised! Our fortresses would be doomed from the invasion of phase-shifting, cheese-eating, obstacle-defying sentient vermin!  :o

If they're vermin then they might not drop like regular creatures (goblins). Think of it as if the vermin just hang on and climb up the side of the cliff. They can do that you know. I've seen mice climb up perfectly vertical pipes with ease.
