Floodgate maintenance...?
« on: August 12, 2006, 08:20:00 pm »

OK, I thought I had the hang of irrigating with floodgates but I guess not. I've got a nice little fortress going, set up a few farm plots, irrigate them just fine. Winter comes, I make it through all right, and then spring comes. Yay, I can farm again.

All over my entire fort, apparently.

How exactly is it that the exact same channel arrangement that worked fine last year now insta-floods the whole fort? I have cut through to the river in two other spots: one, a natural floodplain which stayed bone-dry, and the other, another channel (unconnected) which still has its floodgate up. How does this happen?

What stopped the water before?  Another floodgate?  A regular door?  It's hard to say at this point how it could have creeped through.

Doors, shut tight but not locked. I could understand if this wasn't enough to block the water, but it was sufficient to keep the water out the first time which is what confuses me. The doors have rocks piled on top of them too but those were there for the first farming season as well.

This happened after I had updated to the new version, so I cheated a bit and copied the save from the backup I had of the old version and played through winter again with an extra set of floodgates installed and it did happen again (the new floodgates stopped the water but it still went over the old doors that had stopped it the first time).

In my experience, doors that are "shut tight" with rocks on them never stop water.

I haven't had any water-to-door interaction before this version though. I have been paranoid about fortress flooding so only use floodgates (and thus had to make an excess of levers and there was no harvest the first year because of slow start... but there it is. Next time I'll do better!) until a mishap in this version (playing while tired is not a good idea).

If there's rock on the door, the water should spill over them.  If you move the rock and then set the door to "locked", it should work better.

Ultimately, one of the safer ways to do farming I've found is by having the channel itself be the only way to enter the farm.  No other doors or floodgates.  One channel with a flood gate at either end, and the farmers walk in through there when the river gate is closed.  The non-river gate is in a room that is completely surrounding by walls, with the channel being the only entry way.

Edit:  I've updated the door interface to clarify what was meant by locked/ajar, and it'll tell you in yellow if the door is open.

Then that's odd, because I would swear one of my flooded rooms had had a rock on it the first time. Admittedly I haven't had a lot of sleep the past few days--in large part due to the game--so spontaneous hallucination is entirely possible. But I distinctly remember noticing the rock the first time. By the second time, all the doors had rocks piled on (moved there when building farm plots) so apparently those behaved as normal.

Well, hopefully it'll be more clear when the next interface comes out, then fewer dwarves will die until they die later in the same game.

Speaking of sleepless runs, any really nice ones yet?  I don't think it's quite at the transport tycoon level yet.  My brother and I pull shifts on that for 48 hours once, many years ago.
