Vanishing downward designations
« on: November 13, 2007, 11:36:00 am »

If a floor tile changes type, such as from grass to soil, any downward designation is lost.  This happens for channels and downward stairs, and probably for up/down stairs if you can manage to get that situation to happen.

Hrmm... Can anyone comfirm that they're actually lost, as opposed to being rendered over by mud and such?  That is, given idle minors, will they still mine the squares anyway?

I'm not the OP, but I can confirm that it's definitely lost. I had a miner doing a strip that looked like this:

code:

.........
.._____..
.........

. = ground (not bothering showing sand here)
_ = channel designation

and he spread some sand as he got into position to do the left most channel first (he went left to right). Once he did the right most channel, he ran away to idle. Looked like this:

code:

.........
..xxx~x..
.........

. = ground
x = open space
~ = sand

I had to redesignate the tile that was covered with sand. The miner ran over immediately and dug it out.

I've noticed that designation lost not only when tile change type but also when dwarf changes his job while digging/smoothing  etc. I.e. dwarf who smoothing the wall breaks his task and go to eat/drink/break or simply scared by any creature.

Designations are very frequently lost by tracked mud. It's most disturbing when digging large channels, because it leaves inaccessible pillars in the middle of the channel.

I can confirm what Anjey aka PM just said. Very annoying, though quite minor since simply redesignating the missing pieces works fine.

It also seems to bug with when dwarves are carrying something, to simply move it or to build it somewhere and then drop everything they do to go eat/drink/sleep. Sometimes it takes the hell of a long time before another dwarf decide it's okay to touch the item again... For example, I have a stone block lying outside my fort for almost one year now, and nobody thought it'd be nice to take it back to storage...

It would be nice if dwarves were able to decide out if it's a matter of life or death, or if they can take the few dizains steps left and end their current task instead of just dropping everything they were doing and go do whatever they needed to... Especially since my storage area is just right next to my dinning room, and that the food is in the storage area and that they would have gotten there anyways. Sure look dumb sometimes when they drop the item a few tiles before where they were supposed to drop it.

I almost always designate channels in unmined rock, so I never have problems with dwarves tracking things over the channel or standing on one that's being dug out. (They seem to dig both the top and bottom layer at the same time, I think)

It's hard to dig channels in unmined rock, because you can only dig a 1-wide channel along a wall, since you get the floor removed as well. It'd be nice if the channel designation thing made miners dig normally until they complete the designated area, and only then dig down.
