Attachment to weapons
« on: November 03, 2011, 03:18:10 pm »

I've seen the "Urist Axedwarf has grown attached..." message plenty of times, but today was the first time I tried doing anything about it.  I seemed to be able to use the equipment screen to tell them to pick up different weapons (eg, axes instead of spears).  So what does attachment do? Is it just that they will always pick up the same spear if that category is assigned to them?

Dwarves who have become attached to equipment will prefer to equip it if possible - if you prevent them from equipping it (either by Forbidding it or by restricting their uniform to no longer permit it), they'll equip something else.

Becoming attached to a piece of equipment is also a prerequisite for naming it and making it a semi-artifact.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

So can I avoid this completely by just telling them to equip a specific weapon?

What's wrong with a dwarf being fond of his weapon?

I had copper crossbows for the longest time and most of them had been grown attached to. I upgraded to all steel and the Dwarfs equipped the new ones just fine.. I wonder though. Can a Dwarf get attached to a new weapon if they already had grown attached to a previous one?

Quietust, does this make the weapon any better damage wise or in any other way or is it just a weapon with a name?

They wield copper battle axes instead of steel ones.

Way to miss the innuendo.

I am not Quietust and make no attempt to speak for him/her, but no, it's just named and added to your artifact list as a "weapon of note" due to its large contribution to your fort (usually to its piles of dead invaders). Instead of the usual yellow it will be listed in blue text to differentiate. Armor and shields can also receive this treatment, though it's more rare (I don't think I've ever seen named armor, though I have had a named shield), since such things don't kill so easily.
