No large battles yet, but during my first ambush, Mosus Ironaged (the militia commander) and Alen Windburrow (His most veteran squadmate) killed nine goblins without taking a single hit, after the goblins struck down a fishery worker, furnace operator, and the unfortunately placed head marksdwarf while they were getting a drink from the river (This was during the great booze shortage of 132). They then proceeded to stand guard for several weeks, during which they stopped several vicious animals and two babysnatchers from entering the fort.

Unfortunately, one of the dwarves with the making of a hero, Urist Hammeredminded, recieved a broken rib and torn liver, and died shortly after the ambush due to lack of soap in the hospital. He was an adept axedwarf and had at least skilled in all other combat abilities, as well as wielding a superior set of iron armor.

It was some time last year, and I still hadn't figured out the military, but I had a hunting elephant named Stampy.  I unleashed the clowns by accident, and Stampy held them off long enough for his hunter companion and several others to get to the surface.  I ended up abandoning a short while later due to fps and clowns.

Another modded hero- i found this in legends. A particular modded creature called Zalifen (like goblins, but EVILER) called Ono Fatherseduces had been stealing babies and children from other civs since Ono was an adult (45 years by this stage)...

Ono stole a dwarf, who starved to death in dungeons, as happened to three elves, a human, a drazardman, a goblin, and a zalifen from a different civ.
Then, one day, Ono tried to capture another zalifen. The zalifen child broke free after his parents freed him from Ono's bag by ripping off the hand carrying it- then this zalifen child fought Ono childo-e-mano and defeated him, bringing an end to his tyranny.

This child then ate Ono's corpse and ended up getting twenty something kills.

Pretty heroic!

My hero proved his valiance many a time; he guarded the entrance to my fortress. Tosid Antakzon: a marksdwarf twas he. A rather heroic one at that as well. Massacred three goblin ambushes as well as picking off any kobolds attempting to intrude upon my fortress. Although, his fate was a awful one. We were sieged, and my entire military thought it was the perfect time to go sleep, and he was the sole dwarf who was out defending against about ten goblins, some wielding axes and hammers. He killed about five, and chased the others off the map, beating more and more with his crossbow, killing two more. The last he killed had injured his leg pretty badly, and the rest made a successful retreat. Then, my dwarves decided it best to ignore him out on the field, being dicks and not bringing him food or water. And it started to rain. How depressing. Then, once he died (rest in peace, sweet marksdwarf), everyone went absolutely nuts. Melancholy this, tantrum that, berserk everywhere. And in 20 minutes, my fortress population went from 120 to 30. And to punish the rest, I locked all the workers left in the top of a tower, for them to starve to death (everyone was dying from not eating or drinking anyway, or by a berserk dwarf). Ten drowned babies later, my fortress had crumbled.

Fun fact: Dwarfs don't care if you saved their lives; they're still dicks.

FEB POSTHANDS THE BRONZE DOOR OF CALAMITIES in the fortress of SPEARHALLS

The militia commander and leader of my main squad who were my big guns. His candy weapon was a named artifact way before anyone elses. He had hundreds of kills and when the fortress finally fell to pieces he was like the last dwarf alive trying to cut his way through the madness. Basically anything military was his responsibility and the whole militia was a real credit to him. He was like the single greatest dwarf i've ever had. He sacrificed everything and became a real player. I made sure he had royal rooms, good food and company. My only regret is he was never buried next to his wife and kids. His tomb remained empty. His status page was just a mass of "He has a long scar" "His arm is a mass of scars".

I finally figured out military today.

One of my recruits beat the living snot out of an elkbird that wandered up out of the caverns.  No sooner did this occur than the armorer got a mood and made a shield.  The shield went to the recruit as a reward for her bravery.  Not a big battle, and no title for her, but damn, an elk bird with bare hands deserved something.

This is a dedication to the late macedwarf Morul Kokebablel, who died after the first Battle of Diamondspun in 128, when the Forgotten Beast Lomifo Fafirelebovo invaded the dwarf village's lower halls.  Lomifo Fafirelebovo was an enormous theropod with external wings, leathered wings, and long ecru feathers.  When all trained dwarves were ordered to await the beast at the uppermost opening of the mine shaft leading down to the caverns, Morul and followed two of his allies down towards the beast in an attempt to reclaim valuable equipment from fallen comrades below.  The first two dwarves encountered the sealed doors which barred Lomifo outside and them inside, at which point they returned to their designated posts.  In a terrible twist of fate, however, Morul reached the doors at the same moment Lomifo broke them.  Despite his training, Morul was but one dwarf faced against a legendary monster from the depths of the earth.

Morul's mace connected with the beast but a few times, each a futile blow, but Lomifo's strikes were more injurious.  Before long, the winged therapod seized Morul with each arm and each wing.  The claws of Lomifo's arms grabbed the helpless dwarf's right hand and shield, and the claws of its wings grabbed his throat.  Unable to shake off the monster, Morul attempted to survive the strangulation.
Saddened by the inevitable loss but determined to maintain my strategy, I kept my squads positioned at the shaft's entrance, waiting for Morul to die a warrior's death and Lomifo Fafirelebovo to emerge.

I waited for 12 days.

For 12 days, Morul fought the creature's crushing grip.  For 12 days, Morul did nothing but stubbornly live to see the next minute.  For 12 days, Morul survived by drinking blood, eating fear, and breathing hate.

Inspired by Morul actions, born of emotions I believe only dwarves know and humans can never understand, I sent my squads down to slay the beast.  If Morul could be saved, I would spend every resource and second in an attempt, but I held no hopes.  I did not realize that the opposite would occur.  I did not know that, during the combat, Morul would save every dwarf who came for him.  He did this with the same strategy with which he had done everything for nearly two weeks: he survived.  Obviously terrified by the undying macedwarf in his clawed wings, Lomifo Fafirelebovo refused to release Morul's shield and weapon hand, let alone his throat.  Over the course of a day, the other dwarves hammered, slashed, chopped, pierced, and bit Lomifo.  Finally, the beast died.  His unbreakable grip broke, and Morul slumped to the ground.

After 13 days of strangulation, the macedwarf Morul Kokebablel passed away.  The cause of death was blood loss from the wounds he sustained in the first moments of fighting Lomifo Fafirelebovo.

Truly, Morul's was a neck forged from Armok's Flame itself.

A honorable mention to not a single hero, no, 7 rock-hard survivors; The squad The Golden Bolts.

The Golden Bolts is one of my three 'civillian militia' squads, wearing an uniform of leather with iron breastplates, helmets, random shields and iron spears. These squads are filled with farmer immigrants. Because of this, they only train during the winter, and the first month of autumn. They are the first line of defense, and die standing while holding the line for back up to arrive.. Usually.

A goblin siege visited the fort, bringing many trolls, elk birds.. verocious cave crawlers... While my legendary squad was bashing away a forgotten beast and other cave creatures in the caverns far below. Very. Bad. Timing. The first two squads died while holding off the marksdwarves, killing some, but not all of them, and ultimately being screwed when the cavalry AKA lashers and trolls arrived. They held the line, but couldn't keep up forever and were killed without mercy.

Meanwhile, The Golden Bolts were fighting a little bit away... and despite their average combat skills, were doing good. Very good. I tried sending them back to the fort, but they refused to stop fighting till the last of the squad and creatures were gone. So they did, and they lost only one in the progress. After THAT they moved back to the fortress, where my traps and some animals were proving a good distraction against the remaining goblins and trolls.
The Golden Bolts massacred them from behind with trusty iron spears, probally thanks to them being weakened from traps, and six out of the seven survivors actually have a title now. They managed to stop the siege before the legendary squad managed to get to the surface, with bad training and equipment; Nearly all of them had to go to the hospital after, where one died from bleeding outside and one from an infection in the hospital.

So i raise a mug to The Golden Bolts, the farmers covered in scars, stitches. They are retired now, in a small house above my fort, where they dine, talk, drink and sleep in peace. Half of them on crutches. In the middle of this house is an artifact weapon rack, with an engraving of one of the soldiers slaying a troll.

One of my mason's, wielding a copper pick axe, ran forward to recover the body of a fisherdwarf during a siege, and rescue a trapped farmer.
[At this point I was glad I trained everyone into the military]

He singlehandedly fought the siege by himself, killed 2 goblins, crippled one and held the rest of at bay until my full time military dwarves could arrive.

Risen LovelyTorches, I salute you!

My fort gets crashed by a Roc before the ceiling is done, and I start to think this may be the end of the fort if my two-dwarf military gets killed. Then, my swordsdwarf engages the Roc and kills him in one page of combat, taking no injuries.

The Roc had no injuries and had engaged in no combat prior to the match.
