Custom Memeorial Slabs
« on: October 16, 2011, 02:40:47 pm »

This idea just came to me a moment ago. I think it would be very interesting if you had some say into what was engraved on memorial slabs. After all, we are the all-powerful fort overseer. Why shouldn't we be allowed a little leeway in writing the epitaphs of our minions?

Just think, you could have something like this:
"This tomb commemorates Urist Offdenson, Reagent of Fancy Lacey Halls between 1243 to 1244. Died in an unfortunate magma incident only days after making his bold, forward-looking proclamation that our dwarven industry must diversify from simple military and survival focus into full-blown realgar door production. Regardless of whether there is any realgar in our hemisphere or not."

I like this idea. It's kind of like how the engravings are supposed to give adventurers an idea of what went on in your fort. Only possible problem I can see is that it might step on the engravings' toes a little bit.

People who suggest things shouldn't start with the phrase "This idea just came to me a moment ago." unless they plan on sleeping on it before posting.

Why not? Seeing who exactly in the fort you visit liked socks more than their own well being would be funny.

I think before any changes on the slabs/engravings/decorations stuff we need a better way to coordinate how to do them and a better UI.

Agreed. First, enable a filter in the names listing to avoid having to scroll through 239 dead goblins, *then* make custom slab engravings ;)

maybe it could be set up to filter by race?

That would be helpful. Then maybe you could engrave memorials for fallen pets, war dogs who took a dozen goblins down with them, cats who held doors open at critical moments, and so forth.

Also maybe allow sorting by alive*/already memorialized*/buried/unburied/ghosts.
*Once such status sorting is implemented, I'd like to be able to set up memorials to my favorite dwarves all around the fortress. Plus, monuments to still-living dwarves would probably give happy thoughts to the monumentalised dwarf, would reduce ghosts while finding a use for slabs in non-deathy times, and might be awesome combined with the original suggestion. E.g,
"This iron** memorial is dedicated to Urist McMoody, who created an artifact iron axe that has saved our fortress many times."
**I'd also like custom slabs to be forgeable out of metal, and maybe blowable out of glass.

or just an option that says "press g for goblins, d for dwarf, h for human, e for elf, l for leaders(includes warlords and raid leaders)"

and i like the idea i walk into a fort and see a mesage saying "mountian guard the city that touched the sky, broke into the sea of fun, tamed the dark and brought up blue ore fell in the year 210 in the age of HFS to the consecutive attacks of elf goblin and human titan and dragon."

or "spizglaten the failed supper project"

or "welcome to HFS would you like some fun with your carp"

Couple of things.

First, please clean up your spelling and grammar.

Secondly, i don't know about "press g for goblins, d for dwarf" etc., because you might have a modded race and/or two races with the same first letter in their name. Maybe have it so you have a button specifically for your units, another button for hostile ones, another for friendlies etc., and have a button that toggles between showing all bodies in that catagory, and bodies in that catagory that haven't been memorialized yet so i don't accidentally waste slabs on bodies that have.
