Vista 64-bit DF
« on: April 11, 2008, 07:16:00 pm »

So I recently got a vista 64-bit laptop.

It runs DF GREAT.

maximum size area, 200 dwarves 60FPS!!!

In the beginning, I was able to tweak it so it would be between 400 and 600, but as the population grew, it slowed to 60. Still not bad  :D

I call shens.

But only to keep from contemplating the alternative.

I can't afford a new computer!

64-bit and Vista have nothing to do with the performance equation.
Vista might, considering it's a major hog of RAM, but that would be a negative effect, not one like you're describing.

Do you know the specs of this laptop?

I would say that given a computer capable of running Vista smoothly, the hardware would also have to be capable of running DF at max speed on a large site with hundreds of dwarves. The fact that you then happen to be running Vista on said hardware only hampers the process.

I'm gonna buy a Quad Core Extreme 3.3 ghz (i think it was 3.3 i allways forgot, but it was the fastest one the current site provided) , 4gb ram, 2x 8800GT 512 next month with vista 64bit, but it's going to be used for codeing and other games besides DF. But i really hope that i will have the possibility to play DF for real then.

core2 duo processor 2.5ghz x2 (yes I know DF only is capable of using 1, but I assigned everything to the other 1, and DF gets it's very own processor    :D)

4Gigs of ram

256mb video card

That's all the relavent stuff probably.

Oh, I set it's priority at realtime and disabled everything but the economy.

Oh, and the 10x10 area is sinister Tundra, the only inhabitants are skeletal Muskoxen and Skeletal Elk. Obviously the goal was to make the map as simple as possible, and it seems to have worked pretty well   :D. The map is completely flat also.

I'm going to get a new computer soon too. One of the quad core intel procs, 4gb memory, 1gb vid card. Should be a huge improvement over my current old Pentium 4 machine. I can't wait till I can finally run a 200 dwarf fort on a 5x5 map instead of usual 25 on a 2x2 (and that's at 50fps without temp or weather).

Hahah, the main things devouring system resources are temperature and water flows.
So, without temperature I can easiy have cool fps at 200 dofs in huge area, but it's not enough.
I don't like magma to be like a warm water. No fires? Bah...

Well I just account for all the things that are turned off, and I will turn on invasions when the fort is ready. I still make sure there can't be a cavein, make sure all my dwarves are clothed, etc.
