Plant count in food stores reporting wrong
« on: February 18, 2007, 07:30:00 pm »

Okay, I don't know what is going but on my current fortress the food stores and kitchen menus are not reporting the correct amount of plants.

And after looking a bit close, one of my Masons is claiming every damn Plump Helmet he can get his hands on as his own. I don't know what is going on or why this guy has a mushroom fetish, but it is quite annoying and rendering a bunch of food and barrels inaccessible.

I made an archive of the save here http://www.msu.edu/~graffdav/save.rar

He's trying to overthrow your power by buying out the food supply. The only solution is turning him into an elephant wrestler.

Yes, that specific gentleman is about to go running naked straight at the local giant leopard to solve this little problem now that new masons have arrived. But how he came to call dibs on half my food stores is a mystery to me

No dwarven economy; he started doing this when there was only about 9 dwarves in the fortress. I checked out his preferences and his only food preference was dwarven flour, which I have absolutely none of at this point.

I noticed that dwarves call ownership on food items before they eat them. I can only assume that something in that portion of the code went crazy and the guy claimed what I found out later was 31 plump helmets for himself that were then inaccessible.

I've had the same thing happen with one of my fisherdwarves. Originally he was only claiming two plump helmets to cover the floorspace in his room and replacing them after they withered, but after a coffer was installed claimed 20+ leaving them in their barrels.

As others have noted, this is probably because he is claiming the food to eat it, and then he is getting interrupted somehow.  He might be in a place where he can't reach the food even though he's already claimed it as owned, or you might have done something like removed the table or chair he was headed to eat when he got hungry.

Regardless, it's documented (actually twice) in the Bug list that dwarves will treat food as an owned item, and just claim another thing to eat, and then try to eat that, if interrupted.

At one point I had a similar problem with a butcher who kept on getting interrupted by "dangerous terrain" (cave river overflowing) when he was trying to haul food from his freshly butchered kill to the dining room.  It eventually just stopped being a problem -- probably because I built a ton of bridges in the interim, and seasonal drownings entirely stopped.
