Elf Tree Warning
« on: January 04, 2008, 01:57:00 am »

I got the warning that I disrespected the trees in this area, which I thought only occured when you cut down too many of them.  I, however, acquired my lumber through trade, as I'm in a tundra map with maybe 10 trees standing.  Only time I cut them down was year one and two, a couple years back from now.

dont worry, in some time a diplomat from them show up and will set up an assignement over how many trees you may cut down...

but since you dont cut them down anyway, you might not care about this at all

This usualy means they start a war on you in a few years anyway.

Kill them before they have a chance to breed i'd say.

Blood for the blood god, skulls for the skull thone(or the finished goods stockpile in this case)

The initial message from the elves comes if you have chopped down a single tree.  It isn't a prelude to war.  That happens if you violate an actual agreement.

First off, I'd recommend against angering the elves.  Last I heard, they don't siege you, they just show up with bows and take pot-shots at anyone who strays too close.  You think goblins with ranged weapons are a nuisance?  Try dodging elven raiders!

I don't know what effect declining an agreement has; never said "no" to an elf diplomat yet.  I DID (accidentally) overshoot an woodchopping agreement once; back came the diplomat who - after shaking a finger at my naughty ways - offered a higher quota next year.  The gifts we kept giving the elven traders might have had something to do with this...

I've yet to see the elves offer more than about 40 trees on my current save (on 33g). The most recent diplomat said the limit would be 30 so I finally told him to "relax, they're only trees". My current fortress is sitting on top of a 2-layer aquifer that I haven't got through yet so I need all of the wood I can get to make charcoal.

Diplomat seemed to leave happy enough and I successfully traded so I seem to have got away with it for now. I've designated all of the trees North of my walls for chopping but haven't felled many of them as my woodcutters seem to be more interested in doing other stuff.

It's interesting how no longer having guaranteed magma makes the lumber limit a lot more important than on previous versions where I rarely got anywhere near going over the quota.

The elves gave me a quota of ~50.  I'm on a heavily forested map, though (I cut down a few hundred trees just building roads to the edge of the map.

i'm not too sure, but i've said yes two years running, 1'st year they said about 3 trees, this year about 47, not sure if its in relation to how much i offered their traders or whether it increases each year by its self, but it looks like it can vary each year. (or if its related to the social skills of the person their talking to, though that hadn't changed in terms of the level, whether the numbers behind the words had made some effect)

i did wonder if saying "relax their only trees" lets you cut down the 100 they originally say and that you agree to.

edit, having said that, i just accidentally pressed space on the first screen (i was pausing and un-pausing and it came up as i was pressing space) (why does a important decision dialog use the same button as a frequently used function?!)
they just said "lets discuss our other agreements" then said "well we don't see eye to eye... HA!...." and left
i still am peaceful with them on the civ screen and i don't seem to have a lumber limit agreement.
perhaps my offerings of over 25000 this year and last helped persuade them to leave me alone?
