Removed walls holding back magma, but magma doesn't not
« on: November 12, 2007, 03:45:00 pm »

Since DF is just freezing on me due to tantrums or somesuch a few minutes after loading my current save now, I decided to have some fun with magma and water.

I have a 35x6 or so magma storage tank which is full of 7/7 magma. The connection between that and the volcano is plugged with an obsidian tile (created with water earlier). The tank is next to a hallway, separated by a constructed wall made out of diorite rocks. I ordered the walls removed (d->n) so that the magma could flow out and down the hall, but the magma is not cooperating.

The walls are gone now, and the magma continues to sit perfectly still as though the walls still existed. Here's a screenshot with the cursor (in k mode) over one of the former wall tiles: http://screencast.com/t/X0JJBLEy

As you can see, the dwarves had time to remove all 6 wall pieces and yet the magma has not flowed out at all.

Edit: However, if I have a dwarf dig out the smoothed pillar square (which was not a constructed wall) just south of where the wall was, the magma immediately begins flowing through the tiles where the wall used to be.

I think Toady needs to rework those rewalls ASAP. They really should count as normal walls, not constructions, as long as they're made of stone. If they're metal, I don't know. Maybe they would just be undiggable?

If you make a totally artificial square to hold water it does the same thing, and the only way to get it to flow again is to remove every single section of the wall touching the water.

or at least that's what happened to me anyway.

Oh yes, definitely. Regular old stone could make rough stone walls (i.e., unmined rock) and stone blocks could make smooth stone walls.

Not sure about metal or wood though.
