Anyone still playing 40d?
« on: November 28, 2011, 11:21:47 am »

Exactly what it says on the tin.

So, does anyone still play 40d?
I find it hard to leave the version I'm so comfortable with... also, it runs speedier and just kinda feels simpler in a nice way.

Sure, I do.  Sometimes I want a fort without all the military fiddling.  That is my only complain at .25.  I do miss all the cool extras in 40d, but when I want a fast, simple fort, I make one for 40d.

Interesting enough, I opened up a 40D megaproject that I hadn't yet finished, just the other day.  Probably doesn't count as it's been unplayed since well before the current .31.25 'kiloproject' fort.

(Reports!  Pastures!  Loads of bedrock!  What a lot of stuff I was missing.  Various extended nobility, Hammerers and Philisophers!  Notso. :) )

My roomie still plays 40d. I talked to her about some of the new features of .31 and she gave a resounding "meh".

I wish there was a toggle for the old military system. I hate spending 2 hours to get it up, and 10 minutes everytime I want a new recruit. Not to mention the pain in the ass burrows = /

I tried playing 40D once, after hearing all the crazy stories about it, but for some reason it ran so. very slowly.
Like, a keypress would take a couple of seconds to register, for some reason. Any ideas why this would happen? ???

I honestly don't understand everyone's gripes about the Military system. So it takes a few more button presses to get some things done, big whoop, you can still do everything you could do in 40d once you've taken the time to get used to the new stuff.

Kobolds attacking me early on, so i make a squad with my Miner as the leader, outfit him with his pick, then go into the squad menu and tell him where to go. Done. Kobolds are dead, i disband the squad, remove my Miner from the Milita Commander position, and he's back to work.

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

Honestly, that sounds more like you doing something horribly wrong than any actual issue with the military screen. It shouldn't take you more than ~10 key presses to assign a new recruit to a squad:

M->[DownArrow until squad highlighted]->RightArrow->[DownArrow until slot highlighted]->RightArrow->[DownArrow until new dwarf selected]->Enter

I miss some things about 40d. The military was definitely simpler, but now that I've finally gotten used to the new military system, I'm not so bothered by it.

I do miss the philosopher and dungeon master. A lot, actually...

But .25 has a ton of new stuff that more than makes up for it. The caverns, the magma sea (these two things alone are ridiculously awesome, considering how often it used to be necessary to deal with a magma-less/waterless embark), new beasties to fight during sieges, forgotten beasts, etc etc. Also, I love nesting birds.  :D
