A Bronze Colossus - My First - A Tale of ? and ?
« on: October 17, 2011, 02:27:36 pm »

This is a copy of the log I typed thus far in my current fort.

The Bronze Colossus Sor Nolstogusslax Snusnudroz has come! A gigantic magic statue made of bronze and bent on mayhem, (16th Moonstone, 258).

16th Moonstone, 258: Good, the war dogs are attacking, giving the 21 military time to assemble. I've nothing but goblin scraps and copper fun. (Moutainhomes ain't brought us but 5 bars o' iron. In all this time. I've asked - they don't even bring meltables. I also have a bar of steel and 2 pig iron. Yay.)

18th Moonstone, 258: RUpArm Fracture, RUpArm TornOpen, LUpArm Fracture, LUpArm TornOpen, RUpLeg Dented. (50 Pages of glancing, glancing, glancing. Though Urist McHammerdwarf's attempts at the head are more than enough fun, I prefer the toe-smiters.)

19th Moonstone, 258: ... LFoot Fracture SmashOpen, RFoot Fracture SmashOpen, RUpLeg Fracture SmashOpen Dented, LowBody Fracture SmashedOpen, RUpArm Fracture TornOpen, LUpArm Fracture TornOpen, UpBody Fracture TornOpen, RLowArm Dented, RLowLeg Dented, RHand Dented. (Sense a pattern here?)

21st Moonstone, 258: 137 pages of glancing and new and improved glancing. We call it chipping.

23rd Moonstone, 258: 122 pages. I am assuming that after so much, the log purges itself or something. This BC has 21 lines of injury text. Its nose is dented.

25th Moonstone, 258: 111 Pages, then the bastard fell into a murky pool. Guess I have to dig him out to "save" him. There is no fraking way he gets to sit in a pool sunbathing.

5th Granite, 259: So many pages. Anyway, this could never end, so I dfreveal'd to find some candy. We are digging there as I write this. Incidentally, there was an ambush with a goblin thief with an ambush. 2/4 of the squads broke off to deal with that handily. There are more things we can melt now. We have since closed the gates, as our priority is to kill the BC in our tree farm/pasture. [No one would dig a channel, being afraid of said BC, so I breached the pool's wall underneath.]

19th Granite, 259: Crashed twice at about the same place, so I did many small different things and also saved and reloaded a bit before where it should have crashed a third time. I am now making my first addy axe. Much blood and tantruming. To be fair, I am just sitting back and hoping Armok will help. Much of both our blood and that of the green-skins has been shed, and if this fortress fails, O Mighty Blood God, well we can't be spilling any more blood for ya, now can we? Surely there are more goblins you wish us to, emm, cleanse the ground with.

23rd Granite, 259: It is slow going to make this addy into strands. I've got two at the process, but one is proficient and one is competent. Still, we finally have a few wafers.

9th Slate, 259: Obok Regidor (Obok Glovehowl) killed Sor Gorgecobra the Crystalline Blades the bronze colossus. She finally got that nice addy sword, and lobbed off the bastard's head. Her only kill, to boot. I am satisfied. She shall be called Colossus Bane evermore. [Not bad, considering she has 4 in Swords, 3 in Dodge and 8 in fighting. Not my best trooper at all. I think only 4 of 25 are lower in skills. Gotta love an ultra-fine blade.] That's near four months of pounding on this thing for those counting. It is better it was her - I made an axe for that squads' leader, but he felt it better to rest in hospital with no injuries, even after I removed his bed. (He was a bit confused after that.)

It's been a great day. ;D

My first BC I got raided by fell in a murky pool too. I ended up digging a channel about 15 squares away from the pool, then mining a tube to the wall of the pool, so the miner never got scared until he mined that block and the water came rushing out.

And the colossus - who promptly got decapitated by the panicking miner wielding a candy pick.

I had embarked on a BC shrine once. He killed a puppy and punched a kitten which exploded against a tree, but was generally pretty harmless to my dwarves.

To acetech09;
Oh, the miners only had an issue with a channel into the pool, and I tried quite a few points, though none further than ten paces, (the limit of the lake). I figured that was choice #1, because water = calculations and a simple ramp = too easy to have asked for. Choice #2 was the wall. I think it was Ezum Lamessibrek that dug that wall like it was clay. (It was clay.)

Your choice has its merits and would have been #3. I've enough little pools that I could have done that. But I wanted to get back at this thing fast, and I was still busy digging other things, so cooperation was iffy.

ASCIt; (Belated I like the new name) FOUR MONTHS. It was an over glorified punching bag, really. War dogs and passers-by and every last animal that that thing wandered by, (or that an animal wandered by,) got a bit of ugly, but most everydwarf that died did so of thirst. I tried relieving squads, and that worked well enough, sorta. I am new to this, and some suffered a bit of mis-timing. *shrug*

I wasn't expecting such a thing so soon. All I had been getting was ambushes and thieves. Wasn't even worth enough to be offered a noble. Maybe. The gates were closed long enough for me to notice at least two pissed off liaisons.

The best part of the story is that I now have 108 candy.

In celebration, I have dug a square for strawberries.

I leave you for a time with this;

"The spinning {granite} strikes The Cat in the left rear leg, but the attack glances away!" Apparently Kulet Zastithleth missed his target - by a species and ten squares in the wrong direction.

26th Felsite, 259: Many tantrums, a few going berserk and disposed of. It is my sad duty to report the death of Colossus Bane. There was an ambush and she ran ahead of every one else by more than 100 spans. No one else is close. Damn shame, that. Dumb dorf. She will get a tomb, that is for sure.

26th Felsite, 259, Evening: Another ambush, this one with six more. (The last was five.) Well, we can see if the new recruits are worth anything. I have just drafted them into a new squad and was about to arm/clothe them, but that'll wait.

Igniz Limulnunok, Macedwarf, is alone where the second ambush appeared. Many arrows. He has slight pain, and cannot stand. With motor nerve damage.

28th Felsite, 259: A third ambush. Igniz is still limping? home. The squads are at ambush 2, since ambush 1 is no more. Will split squads to handle #3. Praise Armok this is fun.

1st Hematite, 259: #3 and #2 ran like ponys. Some kills were gotten, but not enough. Fortunately, #4 is here. [Clarification, #1 was 5 gobbos, #2 was 6, #3 I didn't look at, but I only saw 2, and I can see 7 for #4] On a side note, I have many cages up, and no one is getting trapped. I think I built them as cages and not traps now that I think on it. Pretty helpful, that.]

2nd Hematite, 259: Mayhaps it is the corpses, but I think every last gobbo that ran like a pony saw that we are all in a foul mood here. And not being able to actually kill the running fools is not helping matters at all. How can we appease Armok if they run?

[Somewhere in all of that we dropped from ~30 to ~6 FPS. I'll be looking for the why. Aside from digging a few rooms that will become tombs we are no bigger than we were before.]

10th Hematite, 259: Tantrums still going, but nothing serious. Knocking something over seems to quiet everyone. Or killing a dorf. No one really is friendly with anyone else, anyway. I hate idlers, so we have few. My best squad has fallen to internal strife. Granted, there were only three left, but I had hoped that they would get used to death and stuff.

26th Hematite, 259: Ezum Lamessibrek had a great reason to stop channeling: Unconscious. (I'd also take the day off, even if I could not properly express it.)

[Okay, I stopped the pond filling, but that didn't help. I realized that the garbage dump's door was locked, and after much 6 FPS activity, we are now at ~24. The refuse pile right outside was marked for dump, so maybe that was generating a lot of fail.]

1st Malachite: Ranger, Inod Lukfath, died of thirst. Children are going stark raving mad. Another day in paradise.

8th Malachite, 259: The mayor took out the trade depot. Guess he really hated being the broker. We'll build another he can beat up. Also, a diplomat left unhappily. We've a nice office for such things, so I'll go on the premise that a lack of a depot is the problem. Thankee Urist McMayor. <text deleted, lest McMayor reads it. Y'all know what may come. I am thinking a different suite. The red stuff is not appropriate at this point, sorry.>

That is all for now. The only thing to add is that there is a project that sounds like 15 z-level drop, ya know, for gobbo bones.

I am sorry. I really thought that my first colossus would be a glorious end. Tantrums are happening, but I think we will make it. I am not sorry that only in DF can one be sorry for not losing.

All my BC's ran into the cage traps I use to keep the wildlife and snatchers out.

They made great archery targets.

Oh, I see that as being perfect. But read that little bit where I built them as cages instead of building them as traps. Still, I was happy. It would have been boring if I trapped the BC or left it in the pool. What would I write that no one cares about? "Bay12 News - A large Colossus landed in a pool after being whacked a few times. Nothing to follow." You'd tune out, neh?

Plus, I did find out why I lagged like molasses in January - I think. (I am afraid to make conclusions in this game. It generally ends in fail or fun, depending.)
