I have a vast work force of non-workshop Dwarves. Miners, Farmers, Smelters etc. Is it worth setting up a few magma forges set up with profile: Min Dabbling Max Dabbling and then assign every non-workshop dwarf to Weaponsmithing and Armoring and make massive run of bolts? Would this create a vast number of novice Weapon smiths who could then hopefully be candidates for strange moods and make lots of lethal weapons?

as far as I know, you don't need any minimum to have a strange mood, but skill affects what the product of the mood will be.

Thing is, if a dwarf has a mood it automatically goes to his highest skill. (excepting some skills that aren't moodable) If his/her highest skill is weaponsmithing, then congratulations, you've got a weaponsmithing mood. With novice however, your odds will be low. You can try and get everybody who doesn't have moodable skills to train up their weaponsmithing. Novice (rusty) is enough for a weaponsmithing mood, so if you have, say, a planter who gets this mood then atleast he won't revert to the standard stonecrafting.

Had children have strange moods who have had no skills what so ever, course this could be to do with Dwarf Therapist forcing a profession on all individuals except babies should i check the box.

When picking moods, even Dabbling will do. But what with the skill rust these days you might as well go for novice guys. It's not like metal or other materials are THAT hard to come by, anyway.

It seems skilless children will choose between either a craftsdwarf's workshop or a mason's workshop (not sure about the masons, but it applies to dwarves who don't have skills tied to workshops so I'll assume it happens with children as well), and skills that don't have workshops that can produce goods (miner, for example) will choose mason's workshops.

Had miners go for Gem setters workshops before.
