Resting Trapper able to care for animals from bed
« on: February 04, 2007, 10:59:00 am »

I have a trapper with a red (mangled) right hand who's been resting in bed for a few seasons now.  He's got a wounded dog (mangled head, moderately wounded brain) who hangs around him.  His Animal Caretaker skill has been going up constantly; he just hit Legendary.  He was maybe Novice, maybe no-label before his injury.  It seems odd to me that he can care for animals while bedridden, so I figured I'd report it.

This actually sounds like an awesome way to quickly manufacture legendary dwarves. Build a raising bridge that flings dwarves and animals into walls, and then tie the animal to a rope next to the bed the dwarf goes to rest in.

Heck, this may solve my problem of "I only really want to pay attention to one dwarf, but I need to start out with seven and don't want to kill them." Let them be mangled dwarves with mangled animal companions!

Better keep those mangled dwarves happy, though, because while in bed they're learning to become killing machines.  Mine was nothing special before his hand-mangling elephant encounter, but now he's Strong, Very Agile, and Superdwarvenly Tough.  I'd hate to have him go berserk from pain.

Hrm, yeah, animal caretaker was a passive skill...  I guess it's a little too passive.

I dunno - it kinda makes sense.  The poor guy has nothing to do besides nurse his smashed hand and teach his doggy to sit, stay, and brew up some ale...

Does "Healthcare" not have a similar skillup, by the way? Given the trouble my dwarves have going all the way down to the river (instead of the nearby well) to keep the injured watered, it would be nice for them to get something out of it. Maybe have the skill increase happiness from recieving drink?
