Can't melt down metal starting equiptment?
« on: February 04, 2007, 04:21:00 am »

So here I was, thinking I was so very clever. "Aha! I shall make all of my starting dwarves ambushers, and bring nothing else but iron bolts, and by the time the metalsmith brings his anvil I will have already begun melting crossbows and bolts down into iron!" Alas, it seems like my munchkin plan was for naught; although I have a huge pile of metal weapons and ammo, when I try to get a dwarf to melt it down I get the message "*dwarf* cancels Melt a Metal Object: Needs item."  It clearly isn't charcoal that is needed, since I have plenty. I've tried removing the equiptment from stockpiles, and putting it inside; no good either way.

So anyways, I figure one of two things is happening:
-You can't melt items with charcoal, or
-You can't melt down starting equiptment.

A pity.

It's that you need to designate the equipment you want to be melted down with the manager. Really, the forge shouldn't even have the option to melt things till the manager shows up.

Additionally, you can't melt down owned objects, but I don't think that's the problem here.

Previous post is correct, but, to be sure, make sure you've turned off the hunting task for all of your trappers if you haven't already.  Otherwise, they'll hold on to their quivers and bows (and occasionally hunt with them.)

I'm guessing you've done this already.

All my trappers get recruited as marksdwarves.  :)
1) Keeps them from killing themselves
2) Makes them useful (see 1)
3) Makes the 3rd most useful thing against invaders (after traps after Steam Defence) as melee dwarves become swiss cheese unless their champions before ever engaging a seige force and champions becomes swiss cheese just after engaing seige forces.

I've noticed a lot of items can't be melted or chasmed even when designated for such. Large daggers seemingly aren't meltable, and foreign objects are highly inconsistent. I have a huge list of Stocks items marked M and C and nobody seems to be getting around to doing it.

It may also be that items equipped by soldiers won't be handed over for melting/chasming, but I don't have that many soldiers and I have plenty of Bronze Masks and such from sieges that aren't getting torched.

You mean the bookkeepper, right?  Or is it actually possible to melt things with the manager?

The intruder arose, casting off its black cloak.  "Behold, stunted jesters!  It is I, Scuro!"  A jagged scar marked the goblin's face from eye to chin, his greasy mane gray and wild, and about his neck was the broken silver amulet, strapped together by a leather band.
