Bees on ice?
« on: October 16, 2011, 03:12:53 pm »

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Playing with Genesis, but I don't think it affects this. Just started a fort and saw a colony of bumblebees on a frozen murky pool. What will happen to them when the water thaws? Will they drown and be destroyed? Or will they randomly swim? The site has a cold climate, so I'll probably have to wait a bit to find out.

Could this be a possible bug?

Also, the colourful graphics of DF prove that ASCII graphics can also be aesthetically pleasing.  :P

From the title of this thread I was expecting people in bee costumes on ice skates.

I am rather disappoint.

I've had this happen before as well. Had a fort a while back that had its own quirks (the top cavern layer was exposed to the surface, resulting in a pretty spectacular natural chasm), and when the exposed subterranean lake froze in the winter, there would be beehives on the surface of the ice.

When the water thaws, the beehive just disappears, if I remember correctly. The bees themselves just kind of fly in every direction and disappear after a while.

Hehe. As it happens I have a lake in my new fort. The lake was frozen at embark. On this lake too there was a colony of bees. Not bumble, but bees. In the middle of a frozen lake. Bit harsh for the poor bees but far more amusingly there were badgers on the lake when it tawed too. :3

I'll reload the saved game now to see what had happened. I think it has just disappeared.

essentially - since Ice does have material definitions and is stone-class building material, it is a valid material to make beehives out of during DF embark preparation.

I had a colony of ants on a frozen river before. IIRC, I think they floated there when it thawed...

Apparently, the nest is now floating above the lake. :/

Not sure whether or not I'll continue this game anyway. The defrosting of the lake locked up my game for damn near 15 minutes.

It's obviously a very rare species of ice bee.

Haha, that we have yet to see.

Yes, the water thawed and they're happily floating in the air.

As Kogut stated, it is a known issue:  Bug #1978 and its children.
