Barrels full of food, Dwarves still hunt for vermin
« on: January 30, 2007, 11:44:00 pm »

Subject says it all. I am midway through winter 2, 40 some odd dwarves. Economy has not yet started up, yet all of a sudden all my dwarves all slowly starving to death. Meanwhile I have at the very least, 44 Plump Helmets all sitting perfectly accessible in barrels, and god knows how much fish and booze.

If anything this seems to have have started after I made the main dining hall into a meeting room, where a child promptly through a month and a half long party. After I got sick of the whole fortress partying I canceled the dining hall designation so that the party would end.  Now the entire fort is either hunting for vermin, or flashing brown arrows  :(

Apparently this was the same pathing issue I have heard about before. Basically, right next to my primary food stores is my farming area. I  locate both next to each other for quick harvesting. For whatever reason, the dwarves were insisting on trying to path through the locked doors (closed and locked due to winter and anticipating spring flooding). Because of this, they could not find a path to the food and slowly started starving. Out of desperation I went through and unlocked every door in the fortress, which caused a mad rush for the Plump Helmets. Note that this entire time, not 3-4 squares directly above the food was a 3 wide hallway leading right to it from the main hall. I assume this might be related to the pathing algorithm being similar to the mining algorithm, that being where it goes for the first available thing from the top left, and moves right and down, or something like that.

Anyway, for reference here is a screen shot of what I believe to be the problem doors. Those circled in red are what I believe were causing the confusion.

Oh noes pathing.

I'm having a similar problem, but it's with providing food to wounded dwarves. I have tons of food sitting in stockpiles, easily accessible, but when they try to give any to the wounded (also easily accessible in their beds) I get this:

Check your door are not barred by trees, I had some trees from flooding grow in front of barrack door and others, just designate all of you fortress for treefelling.

One time, I had a Metalsmith who became hungry, then became a vermin hunter, then starved to death.

It wasn't until a few minutes later that I noticed there was a door that was set to Forbidden, preventing her from going anywhere except on the floodplain (which I had originally thought was accessible, since I had several bridges and doors, but all were forbidden in the last flood and I forgot to allow passage afterward.

My best metalsmith is died from starvation aswell. Other dwarves hunting vermin and "cancels give a food - no food avilable". I got 139 items of food in barrels and my cook prepares lavish meal non stop.
There is also 2 fields 10x10 with farmers working on them. No door to kitchen or food storage some swarves still smart enough to take some plump helmet from storage and eat.

Experiencing this same problem.

I checked my kitchen stocks, and it says I have no food left! Despite the fact that I had 176 plump helmets just minutes ago.

:) My foog is back, although I am now short one metalsmith.
