So, I've so far built two successful fortresses in great starting locations (I prefer half mountain, half forest with a river or stream, no aquifer, deep+shallow metals and soil if possible), but after spending several hours without finding iron, flux, or even coal I got frustrated ad used dfreveal... lo and behold, none of ANY of these.  So I went candy mining and lost both fortresses to FBs who decided to show up at the same time as goblin sieges.

Anyway, I was curious if there was still a way to check sites for specific minerals before embark.  I could try the reveal+prospector thing again, but that feels like cheating to me (seeing exactly where it is), and also released HFS who then proceed to lag me out because they can't reach me, requiring me to back up the world before I use the tools and replace it after the search, a very clunky process.

You could always go back to .23. It's not quite as far back as 40d, but it still tells you the first five or so layers.

Why not just use prospector and not reveal? It will tell you if decent ores are there, without showing you where (or activating the HFS).

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Actually I think .18 was the last one with real material viewing.  Otherwise, prospector will tell you everything on the map, easy to get an idea of buried wealth.

The game knows to some extent what minerals are availiable at locations prior to embark, so perhaps there is a data structure in the world.dat that could be accessed by a utility? I don't recall anyone attempting to make a "better than site finder" utility that could find things like specific mineral combinations or volcanoes or spoilers.

Hmm, been using the dfhack prospector that came with the LNP but that one only shows me revealed minerals, so I had to use reveal first.  Unless there'ssomesetting in it for that, but I couldn't find it.

There should be a dfprospector -all file, or if LNP includes the newer version of DFHack which gives the command prompt you could type prospector all in the prompt to show all materials, revealed and non. Of course, revealing, running prospector, and unrevealing without actually looking has the same effect.
