Very begining, huge framerate dive?
« on: October 07, 2011, 12:02:41 am »

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm pretty bummed right now, I spent a couple hours generating maps to get the sorta combo i wanted, finally got it, and now I have the issues in the title.

I literally embark on the spot I want, and for about a minute, being a new map, my framerate in game runs at 100 (the cap it's currently set at in the init file). However, after that minute, everything just takes a dive. The framerate bombs south to, literally, 3. All I did was dig a couple stairways down into the soil (to level 5), and on the first underground level, queued up the digging of 6 9x9 rooms. Nothing complicated or weird. Something I've done a dozen times now at the start of an embark. I've never experienced anything like this though. After about 2 or 3 minutes of that, it rises back to about 30 fps, then so far it's just stayed there (haven't played through the first season yet, just FYI).

There is a stream running through the map, and it has 3 biomes...two joyous wilds ones, and one terrifying biome. Early spring on this map starts with a snow storm blowing on most of the map, with the northeast corner (one of the joyous wild biomes), being green and having no snow on it.

Could it be the river, and the ice/water calculations? Could it be the weather calculations, especially with the weird northeast biome not being snow covered or, seemingly, involved in a snow storm that the rest of the map is getting?

It's just bizarre, I can see no reason for a massive dive in framerate in the begining of the game. I'm not an experienced player, like I said, I've only had maybe a dozen embarks, but my previous, fairly large fortress, with a full 200 population and many sublayers of rooms ran better than this. I mention my newness only as a reminder to be careful about any possible spoilers you might throw out there.

It could be that a huge cave in is happening under ground. Never happened to me but have seen it happen to people that put videos on youtube. If that is the case, your frame rate should recover.

I suppose a major cave in could be the culprit. After running it about 15 minutes, my framerate has climbed to about 50 and is sitting there (which is better, but not great for a very begining), but I've noticed some other peculiar things.

1) The temperature seems to be noticably different in all 3 biomes. Northwest (Good 1), and the bottom half (Evil) of the map were both snowy to start, and the northeast (Good 2) was not. The snow melted at the same time, but the Evil half, and Good 2 part of the map had their river and lakes thaw first (the river does not run through Good 2). Then, maybe an in-game month later, Good 1's river and lakes thawed out. This may be pretty normal, but it's the first time I've seen it on a map.

2) The good biomes are slowly overgrowing the evil biome altogether. (This is probably normal, as I suppose it makes sense. The living stuff would, naturally, grow across the dead stuff's ground)

3) Only one biome, Good 1 in the northwest, has creatures spawning in it so far. No undead or evil stuff whatsoever has appeared, and I haven't seen a thing appear in Good 2, in the northeast.

All in all, it's an interesting map, but I'm thinking maybe I better embark elsewhere. And it seems that the overlapping good/evil biome thing may be somehow bugged when it comes to creature spawn, which is a total bummer. I was hoping to see both extremes. I'll let it run some more and see what happens. Quirkiest embark I've experienced yet, though.

Update for any that care: I think maybe it was the world map altogether. Two more embark sites that were each a square or two away in the region window, resulted in a lock up when embarking. This map was the first one I'd ever generated with advanced paramters. All I changed on it was the Large Region, from Large Island. Just went batty I guess. Suppose I'll toss it out, and maybe steer clear of the advanced parameters generator for now.

Changing parameters from Large Island to Large Region wouldn't cause such massive spikes.
Did you mess at all with the cave layer in the advanced parameters?
Maybe you changed the amount of demons?
How big was the embark?

If you didn't change anything like that I guess it's just this specific seed that somehow creates a weird lag spike effect

PS. Don't get discouraged from advanced world generation. :) It lets you create exactly what you want with just a bit of knowledge (wiki article on world gen is great help on that)

Try revealing the map - it's possible you've got something unusual going on, such as the magma sea leaking into the underworld.

Also, you might try regenerating the world with the exact same parameters - similar glitchy worlds (e.g. adamantine spires) have been "fixed" by regenerating them, since the glitches themselves seem to be caused by memory corruption during worldgen.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Well, the only thing I actually changed in the parameters last night was the history time...I think by default it was 1050, and I shortened it to 125, the way a quick world generate does if you choose short.

I'm wondering it was corruption of some kind though. Because I couldn't resist, and tried regening another world, and withouth changing anything in the large regioun choice except the world age again, I got some really strange maps that had to be buggy. There was an entire area labeled as tropical ocean that was, as best I could tell when I embarked (which I did because the tiles on the map were NOT ocean tiles, so I was curious what hapenned), the whole map was probably what you were referring to when you mentioned "adamantine spires". There were weird columns of mostly that, and lava all over, and "eerie glowing pits".

Maybe my computer was just having a bad time. Or maybe I should just delete my DF folder, and re-unzip it, in case something has been borked. I'll try generating a couple maps this morning and see what happens.

And thanks for the encouragement btw, since you definitely can seem to get exactly what you want in a world map with the advanced parameters. There's far more there than I can understand, but there's lots of parameters in there that I can guess at reasonably. Will read up on it more for sure.

If your experiencing glitches I'd advise you to do a quick scan on your computer.
Actually running a Memtest.org when booting up and having a full pass (I kinda use 2hours for each Gb of memory) could be wise to check if your mem has any issues.
Furthermore I'd also check the cpu to see if it might be unstable.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing Mal. It appears, aftering having generated several maps today, that everything is fine with them. Which leaves the question, what happened last night? My concern ran along those lines, so I ran an error test in HDscan, did a memory test, etc. Things seem to have come up just fine, but still. Maybe just a fluke, but definitely going to keep an eye on things.

That said, as I mentioned briefly, things seem okay now. The maps haven't done anything bizarre, and my framerate holds at a steady and clean 100 at the beginings. Yay for that! Thanks so far, to all that have answered and read this thread :)

In all honesty though, generating a world willed with adamantine spires, magma pools and eerie glowing pits is not something I'd call "bad"

I'd rather call it "Dwarfy"

You make a very good point Vic. That's EXACTLY the sort of thing a dwarf would find irresistable. No matter the challenge, that giant spire of adamantine... no lava or evil pit is going to keep them away from it.
