Is there any way to make streams impassable?
« on: October 05, 2011, 11:47:40 pm »

I was just curious if there was a way to make streams (four tiles wide, a couple tiles deep) impassable by normal means? In order to use it as a 'natural' defense vs. goblins etc..
Thanks.

Streams are basically natural grates over a river.  To make them impassable, just channel down into it.

The light blue things that can be walked on are called brooks. Just channel them out to make them impassable. They work like streams with grates on top... water can be pumped in or out, but objects or creatures won't fall in.

Streams are already impassable, just like rivers and major rivers. The only difference between those is the size.

Streams and rivers also have creature-type fish that will interrupt and sometimes kill your dwarves while brooks are a lot less dangerous and generally preferred by beginners. Fishing is possible in all bodies of water, though I wouldn't advise to do it near a horde of carp.

From what I hear, carp is not so dangerous in this version. Sturgeon and alligator on the other hand...

Carp are still dangerous, but only because they tend to scare your dwarfs into the water.

Carp Any types of swimming creature in the slightest are still dangerous, but only because they tend to scare your dwarfs into the water of your dwarves idiotic sense of self-preservation involves them dodging into whatever fluids happen to be nearby regardless of their ability to swim or survive in magma.
Fixed that for you. :P

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

If you're worried about freezing climates, build a wall across the body of water.
