So I inadvertently robbed the dwarven caravan
« on: October 06, 2011, 08:55:55 pm »

There was a siege exactly when the caravan was arriving. The silly merchants did not run to safety into my wide open (but well defended) fort but kept running around in circles in front of my front entrance trying to fight off the goblins and generally getting slaughtered. My archers were shooting behind fortifications but could not kill fast enough to save the merchants. I did not want to send out my melee troops in the beginning, because they would probably get slaughtered. I finally sent out my melee troops when about half of the goblins were killed by my archers but at that point it seems that all the merchants and their escort were killed.

Long story short, now I have all of their stuff, but they did not go to the trade depot or unload their goods. Seems like my dwarves are just picking up their goods and moving them to my stockpile.

What will happen now? Will my own civilization declare war on me? Or do I just have to give them some free stuff next time they come around? I was also hoping to become the capital ... is that still possible?

if this happens ALOT, they'll get pissy, but that's about it.

a way less bloody way to rob the caravan though is...

construct a hospital and fill it with all the shit it needs, EXCEPT cloth and thread. don't designate it as a hospital just yet.
wait till the merchants enter the map. NOW designate it as a hospital.

watch what happens.

Your own civilization will never declare war on you, you will still get a liaison and a caravan next year, and you can still become the capitol.  However, the traders will interpret this as a massive loss, and will bring less stuff next year.  Give them a big profit to make up for it.

Uhh. Will other civilisations declare war if you repeatedly fail to defend their caravans? I gave bodyguards to elven caravans, but those wood-armored hippies fell too quickly to the goblins. Well, on the bright side, free cloth and wood...

I'm pretty sure they do.  As Sphalerite stated, your own does not, but specifically only your own civilization won't see ransacked caravans as an act of war.  For all they know, they sent a caravan to you and something you did caused it to fail to return - be it lack of protection or direct aggression.  Elves take a bit of a push to get aggressive, but if you've been clear-cutting for a while you might push them over the edge with one caravan, I'm not sure.

But hey, if they do siege you, that wood armor burns well.
