No river flow.
« on: October 03, 2011, 11:37:06 pm »

I started a new fort on the ocean shore.
There is a river flowing into it but the river won't power any water wheels and the surface is completely flat.
Does this have to do with the ocean, is there a way to fix it.
I've tried making channels but nothing moves. :(

If you haven't turned on the option to show water depth, you can see where there's flow, because it will alternate between ~ and the double ~ symbol (if you're not using a tileset), so look for that before building windmills water wheels.

As far as getting continuous flow to generate power goes, if your river has none for some reason, I think you'll still have an option or two...if you dig fortifications in the edge of the map, and then dig from the edge of the map to your river, the river water should continuously drain off the edge of the map, creating continuous flow that you should be able to power a water wheel with.

Is it a river or a creek? Can dwarves walk across it when it's thawed? Creeks have a walkable surface that needs to be channelled into to get to the flowing water.

1) That's brooks, not creeks
2) He said he channeled it.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

You ought to try windmills, too. Since you're by the ocean, you should have wind (realistically).

Better plan. Build up and then run a channel back to the ocean. Then you can build waterwheels onto that and once you've got the first pumps going it'll provide power to continue running them.
