The rivers unfreezing though does seem like a realistic effect to me, minus the bottom layer.  What the game really needs though is sub-biomes, to put between two climate zones.  Ground that is peppered with snow, instead of covered, for instance.  The river has a thin layer of ice that is dangerous, instead of one where you can walk over, and so forth.

Maybe if the top part was frozen, you could simply stop water after that point? Like, simply have it trickle away out of the bottom of the screen. But if it was the bottom part that froze... Maybe a flood, with the river bursting its banks?
I can just imagine the middle freezing XD
