Brewing other Drinks
« on: September 29, 2011, 03:03:13 am »

There's probably a simple solution to this, but I cannot figure out how to brew any other drinks than dwarven wine (plump helmets). For example, I have some prickle berry seeds that the wiki says I can brew into prickle berry wine but the brewer never uses them. I also noticed that I cannot change the brew setting on the seed either.

You need prickle berries for brewing, not prickle berry seeds. You can use the seeds on a farm patch outside to produce new berries.

By default you don't need to change anything to brew different types of drinks, the the brewers just grab the closest brewable plant, I think.

stocks [z] screen => kitchen

if you want to make sure your brewer uses the berries for wine you can forbid him from using the plump helmets for brewing.
you can also forbid plants from being used in meals, making sure they're only used for brewing... or eaten raw by your dwarves.

Doh! Totally knew that.  ;D

Another issue I'm having; I have a small stockpile next to the brewer set to contain only barrels. Only one barrel has ever been placed in it and it has never been used. The brewer always get one from my main stockpile and no dwarves add new barrels to the small one.

Is it a food stockpile, or a furniture stockpile?   If you want a stockpile that contains just empty barrels, you need to make a furniture stockpile.  A food stockpile will have at most one empty barrel placed in it, so if you've disabled all food storage you'll get an empty stockpile with one empty barrel.  You may see more than one empty barrel in your main stockpile, but those were formerly containing some food or drink, were emptied, and then never moved since you don't have a furniture stockpile.

If you have another, larger furniture stockpile that also takes barrels then you need to set the barrel only stockpile to take from that stockpile with q-t

I do have it set as a furniture stockpile and I only allowed barrels.

It would have to be a food stockpile for him to use the barrel. As is, the stockpile is intended to hold furniture, so it holds the barrel, when  food is added to the barrel, the game recognizes it as a food item, and tries to store it in a food stockpile, so if you have open food stockpile spaces, they should eventually use the barrel, but it will be moved to the food stockpile. Try making it a food stockpile, if you have empty barrels, the dwarves should automatically put food in them (if they have nothing else to put in them) [/excessivelylongconvolutedresponse]
