Any way to turn them off? Besides having a follower?

I'm pretty sure this has been asked before, so try searching around the forums for a bit. I think you'll have to edit the raws in order to disable them, but I have little experience in modding DF so I wouldn't be able to tell you how to do it.

Ah found it on the wiki but thanks anyways, now I can finally get a good nights rest.
