I remember reading that CC's insanely low weight makes for bad mail shirts. Makes sense, less inertia and all.
We need some testing done on that weight claim.

Mail has the [STRUCTURAL_ELASTICITY_CHAIN_ALL] token, so it will not protect well against blunt attacks. However, a CC mail shirt is better than a steel mail shirt at stopping/converting edged attacks.

Seeing as you can have several I imagine it would be a good idea to make a candy breastplate, with a candy mail shirt and then two steel shirts underneath? Should cover well against anything.

So essentially when equipping a new melee militia (IE not marksdwarves), give them chainmail early on, and then later you can work on a standard uniform of plate to go over it?
100v100 edged weapons, mail v plate
64 mail, 36 plate

100v100 blunt weapons, mail v plate
59 mail, 41 plate

Definitely recommend mail.

Give them chain of whatever you can get, then try to get plate of a high-quality metal.
