Panic Room
« on: September 17, 2011, 06:00:07 pm »

I've had the idea to have a panic room. I'm using fortress defense mod and I like to have Fun so I might "accidentally" let a siege into my fort to slaughter people. I have my fort on mainly the surface, so its easy to divide. It is in three sections already, but I want to make an underground panic room in case something were to go horribly, horribly wrong. What should this consist of? Its right next to my farm, so food shouldn't be a problem. How many dwarves should I let survive? My population is at 108 right now, what is a good ratio to keep alive? Just how crazy and depressed should I let them be? If they have children, is there any way to get them into a magma shower within the bunker to make the dwarf go crazy? I want this to be realistic, a few dwarves who managed to escape the slaughter in the fortress, with goblins/tigermen/demons in pursuit, just barely raising a bridge to seal off the bunker. All their friends dead, and minimal supplies. I guess what I am asking is what is the best way to keep the dwarf alive but as mentally tortured and traumatized as physically possible?

I recommend basically that. use a burrow system, but "let" a few of your more popular dwarves get taken out by invading forces.

That didn't last long, huh? Shame, cause binary's cool. Anyway, an important message: I will be changing my names on every username based thing I use to ASCIt on/around 10/1. Consolidating, I guess you could say.

I've built a few of these myself in my forts. At its most basic, it should consist of a dormitory with sufficient beds that nobody gets an unhappy thought about sleeping on the floor, a food stockpile sufficient to feed your civilians for a few weeks and a dining room. A few nice statues and some engravings are also a good idea to keep everyone's spirits up.
After you've got that much sorted, it's really down to you. A separate well is a good idea if you can manage the necessary plumbing, of course, as is a small sickbay should you be able to retrieve any wounded before going into lockdown. If I have the dwarfpower and the resources I'll sometimes add a few farm plots in case everyone gets stuck down there longer than I planned for.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

A mating pair of cats for some food variety.

I challenge you to a game of 'Hide the Sausage', to the death.

Perhaps you misread. I want to make the dwarves as miserable as possible without insanity. I've done that method before, where I had a married couple and kids with a dog locked in a room, but it was sort of dull. They survived way too peacefully. I want them to survive, but with maximum Fun value. I don't want fortress ending Fun, but just enough Fun to where it is crippled beyond recognition, covered in blood and screaming to Armok "WHY DO YOU PUNISH US SO?! WE ARE NOT ELVES!" You know? Perhaps a danger room...Is there a way to have a giant badger thrown in there to torment them without killing them?...I must !!Science!! this.

Then perhaps you should throw in a mediocre statue and engrave half the roof with unskilled engravers? Also, make sure when you are picking dwarves to go into the panic room, make sure they have decent skills. A good 5-15 dwarves would be plenty enough that it was interesting, but few enough you could keep tabs on all of them.
