I ussaully make a 5 block wide, 3-8 z tall, wall around my fort, then fill the inner 3 blocks with magma and create floodgates at the enterance that open up and flood the general area with magma. (protip, build your enterance on higher ground so the magma doesn't flow into your fort)

Defenses? What are defenses?

I just arm my militia to the teeth and tell them to guard the mountainhome halls, laying in wait for the invader scum.

Either that, or I have them lock themselves in their rooms and flood the hallways with magma.

Dodge traps. Never fails yet.

Also big fan of Green Glass Giant Serrated Discs.
