Magma doesnt flow 'up' from the last level of the map
« on: November 01, 2007, 08:42:00 am »

You can access the last layer of magma on the bottom of the map (the layer you cant normally dig into) with a channel. However, rather than the magma flowing up out of the channel (which, due the pressure from above, it does when you dig into magma on any other level of the map with a channel), it just sits there.

I suppose the bottom layer of the map has some special properties that prevent the magma there from flowing?

Hmm, maybe so. I posted about almost exactly the same issue here: http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=001540
Likewise, magma wouldn't flow up from the lowest level for me either (though up a stairwell in my case). Will try again from a different level to be sure.

EDIT: nah, I tried digging through on various levels above that and the magma never flowed up the stairwell shaft. It did flow down and fill the shaft below though.

Perhaps thats an issue with the stairs- but its not what im talking about.

I am using channels. On a higher level, i had already successfully dug a channel down into magma, and had it flow up from the channel and flood down through a passageway.

No, what i did was dig a channel into the very last layer of the map, and the magma did not move.

Assume that without an outside force making it do so, it simply will not flow uphill.

As ive said, i got it to flow up hill earlier (on a higher z-level).

EDIT: Did some testing and you're right- i never got it to flow up hill. One of my channels was on the diagonal to the lava flow, which is why the area flooded.

I just tried to reproduce this bug and while digging a channel on the bottom layer of the map NEAR the magma vent (like 12 tiles away!) it  flooded with magma, spilled over, my dwarf fell in (temperature is off), then the game went 'Not responding' and i had to end the process. Perhaps this is because dwarves arent meant to be on the bottom level of the map?

EDIT: Okay, forget this whole thing then, tried re-producing this error and its not a problem, had dwarves merrily mining away on the bottom layer.

I'm not sure I understand why it should be overflowing. If it's connected to magma on a higher level which forces it up, sure, but absent those conditions, why would it overflow? For example, I can dig into an aquifer with a channel, and it won't overflow. I get the impression that you have magma on a higher level on the same map and expect pressure from that to force magma on the bottom to overflow. But have you confirmed that they're connected?

Yes, they are connected, im digging straight into the very bottom of the magma pipe with 15+ levels of magma on top of it.

The other stuff isnt an issue though, so to the other posters in the thread: You're right, its the 'flowing up hill' thats the issue here, my bad.

I just retested in the same area with a channel method instead of a staircase and got the same result, with it not going up out of the channel about 6 levels down from the top of the magma vent (therefore near the middle of the vertical vent).
So, definitely the same problem.

Oh, and this retest was with the updated v0.27.169.33a, though with the save from v0.27.169.32a.
