...how do they build the wall, if it's in the corner?

...won't they just step outside the wall to the next available square and summarily lock themselves out in the most convenient way ever designed?

I thought we were talking about walling off something so that no dwarves are INSIDE it (like a cavern)
the general idea is to set it up so that the last piece of wall must be built from a spot on the side you want your dwarf on
this is easily accomplished at the corners

say I want to wall off an old mining tunnel

.Xcave wallllllllllll
.0
.0  area you're walling off
.0
.0cave wallllll

0-wall
.-nothing
now when you order the last wall built at X, the dwarf must stand on the fortress side when building it.

I'm not sure I've ever had to really do that.  Every time I'm walling off the caverns, I'm always building a ring around my staircase to make a pipe.

it was quite handy in walling out the HFS without losing any dwarves that my militia was dying to save

it's also a good way to quarantine potentially dangerous dwarves without sealing in that legendary mason
