Stocks screen is hax
« on: November 29, 2007, 03:42:00 pm »

Latest fort, my miner gets a mood and wants silk cloth.  I thought I might've traded for some, so I browse the stocks screen.  Listed under thread are 100+ units of cave spider silk thread?  Tab to changes mode and z to zoom and I am staring at a blank expanse of rock.  Dig my way around and down alot of damp stone and sure enough, a cave pool.

Obviously, though my record keeper is quite talented, we shouldn't have known about those impossibly hidden spider webs.

In my next fort I've found more unexplored spider webs and saw both a swallowman's skull and stack of bones, zooming to either the webs or the bones is a blank expanse of unmined rock.  In two seperate spots, so bonus, this new map has got some surprises.

Should the stocks screen be giving these kind of hints though?  Probably not.

Getting past these problems would require an implementation of a "fog of war" effect. Not sure how much lag that would generate, being that it would have to track all of your dwarves to determine what's within their line of sight.

All it would take is the game seeing if the location of the item has been "revealed" or not.

If you do that then you'll have logical break downs like, say you tunnel into a cavern full of frogmen (or whatever the hell) terrified, you wall up the entrance and never visit it again. Despite the fact that your dwarves have no access to the area, the player is still able to view what's going on.

But that's a whole other issue and not related to this one at all.  The thing here is being able to find hidden cave lakes and underground rivers and such just by looking at your stocks.

The game shouldn't even consider that such collectable items exist until one of your dwarf picked it up once (and hopefuly dropped it in a suitable stockpile)

Just add a single boolean to the objets  :)
