Designation: Sleeping Quarters
« on: September 10, 2011, 05:47:49 pm »

I was thinking about how annoying it can be to create bedrooms for large fortresses: creating individual bedrooms 100 times or more loses its appeal.  So, I was thinking "What could Toady do to make this process less headache prone?" My answer was simple, Designations! How much nicer would it be to just designate a large area for housing and the miners automatically start to carve out bedrooms using the same principles Toady uses for the new cities? Sure it would have to be scaled down a bit, but I imagine it would be much nicer, and it wouldn't stop those who are more anal about building from doing their own quarters as well.  Also, there would have to be some mechanism for assigning rooms and furniture (perhaps economy based?) so they don't just sit there empty; placing furniture can be almost as annoying as mining out rooms.

Maybe dwarves wander towards meeting areas to sleep without a room?

I just end up digging out a huge room, putting a whole lot of beds in it, and making it a dormitory.

Actually a more robust system for designating rooms would be amazing. It can be macro'd but becomes subject to having to be split up, then it doesn't respect material or quality unless we first micromanage forbidding things. I personally am somewhat anal about fortress design so I don't mind putting massive effort into making everything perfect one little piece at a time, but I recognize that others have fun playing in different ways.
