dwarves will admire fine roads, based on value like admiring any other building.  "the streets are paved with gold!" keeps happiness up and encourages the arrival of the monarch.  I find paving high traffic areas in gold is rather efficient, in terms of the materials used.  The people get happy thoughts and the nobles don't get jealous of rooms.

Low value paved roads are good for keeping things looking clean.  consider paving archery ranges.  They can also prevent the growth of trees, if you want to avoid certain stretches of the overworld or soil layers becoming tree-infested.

I just paved my roads in gold in my latest fort.  I'm really gunning for that monarch.

In this current fort, I had many a shist block road once, (maybe 3x86? + another 104ish inside,) and the value was bad. I repaved about 3x 28 in gold blocks, and a Mountainhome I became. The difference in value was significant, to say the least. I wish I wrote the numbers down, actually. That'd be more helpful.

I imagine paving with blocks is much better, of course, as they are like smoothed stone when constructed. Or close to that effect anyway. I think. Like everything else in this game, there might be some difference in numbers, happiness generated, your mayor may hate gold, ..................\/

Are blocks really required for metal roads? You can build fine with bars, I believe, but will they be "rough"?
