After his mother jumped into the magma, her child was understandably upset.

Mainly because she jumped in WHILE HOLDING HIM.

The dwarven baby is now just... sitting there IN THE LAVA, getting thirsty. I know if I pour water in he'll get encased.

Temperatures are off by the way.

Edit: He didn't fall/get carried in, someone threw him in there!

His mom's an injured guard and her father's a bone carver, both alive.

He's naked but blood covers his body.

No injuries, save for 'Thirsty', however.

Just pour in water .  It's not like she'll amount to anything.

If temperature's off, there's no way for any dwarf to get burned. Just dig a stairway down there.

Magma is almost harmless if temperature is disabled in the Dwarf Fortress init file. It can still trap and suffocate or simply starve your dwarves in some situations. It will not melt bridges, etc. constructed of non-magma-proof materials.

Then there is no glitch here, because I don't think babies need to breathe.
