I embarked in a terrifieing biome and all I got was this lousy zombie carp.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.  The obvious solution is to chain the baby up at the entrance as a kobold detector.

Unless you get Nightwings or Ogres, evil areas suck. Nothing but skeletal groundhogs and other bull like that.

Werewolves are fun too. My first terrifying biome was a temperate forest. I had embarked with two soldiers with bronze weapons, copper shields, and no armor. A werewolf left my militia commander with a massive jagged scar across his chest.
