Hm, last time I got a military dwarf with a strange mood (newly immigrated and immediately drafted peasant on the way to the fortress) he was instantly deactivated from the military.

sorbius: I asked if you were sure that your dwarf only wants rocks and gems because demands are listed in order, and it loops at the end. The problem is, you don't know when it loops - so if the list of stuff the dwarf wants is, for instance:

• shell
  
• rocks
  
• gems
  
• rocks
  
• gems
  
• rocks
  
• gems
  

then when you look at the workshop, it might look like you've seen all of the dwarf's demands, when in reality you haven't.

Anyway, like I said before: if you want to know what's going on with the dwarf, get a copy of Dwarf Companion. With it, you can see exactly what items the dwarf wants, and in which order. Here's a link even: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Dwarf_Companion

well he says a couple times the dwarf only wants gems and rock, i'm guessing he's taken over a jewlers shop and wants gems of the glass variety and plans on encrusting it with rock, in which case it's quite possible there are no glass gems available and yeah he'll only go pick up the rock after he's got the gems, the real screwball though is having that requirement and not being on a map capable of producing glass since you can't import it
