Separate profession and material skills.
« on: September 04, 2011, 03:42:52 am »

Like that:
(old skill) = (new interpretation)
Woodcrafter = Craftsdwarf + Woodworker.
Mason = Furniture worker + Stone worker.
Glassmaker = Furnance operator + Glass worker.
Potter = Furnance operator + Clay worker.
Jem setter = Decorator + Jeveler.
Bowyer = Weapon maker + (Wood/Bone)worker.
etc.

Bonus: some jobs requiring two or even three skills.
Soap maker = [Al]chemist + Cook.

Hey we're getting a lot of threads on this theme recently!

Note I did something similar in the other thread, which went along these lines :-

Quote
Materials : Stone, Wood, Metal, Bone

x

Skill : Builder, Crafter, Carver.

Builder = Constructions & furniture (Mason with Stone, Carpenter with wood, Blacksmith with metal)

Crafter = Crafting (duh) all the different materials

Carver = Decorator/Engraver (Stone Detailer, Metal Engraver, Wood Carver / Bone Carver)
I'll leave it to your imagination how several existing DF jobs line up with these (It's elaborated in the other thread)

Don't make it too finely grained, or it ends up with too many skills. You need to abstract / simplify a little more. Also, you should come up with a complete table, probably everyone has their own small examples of this idea already. U need a complete treatment covering ALL jobs in the least # of skills.

You can add some of hat I wrote to yours to flesh it out a little, e.g Gem Cutter can use my "Carver" skill and your "Jewel" skill.
